On the 5th July, I travelled to Walsall Arboretum to compete in the £500 Midlands Regional Qualifying for the Summer Slam.
I won my first two matches 4-0, 4-0, 4-0. This put me into the semi-final, where I faced my doubles partner Mason. I have never beaten him before. The conditions were very hard with the wind and the unpredictable bounces. Despite having set point, I lost the first set on a tiebreak, before dropping the second set 4-1. During this set, there was a gust of wind which blew the net over and catapulted an advertising board towards me at tremendous speed. However, I managed to win the third set 4-0, gaining momentum going into the fourth set. I went 3-0 up in the fourth set, before being ‘pegged back’ to 3-3. I won that set 5-3. Into the deciding set! It stayed on serve until 2-2, when I broke on the sudden death deciding point. I was then 40-15 up, when I served and ran to the net to hit a winning volley. That sealed my place in the final.
In the final, my opponent was also tired as he had already had two 4 set matches and one 5 set match. I got off to a winning start, winning the first two sets 4-1, 4-0. In the third set, the wind picked up and at 3-2, I found myself at match point at sudden death deuce. On this point, my shot hit the tape (at the top of the net) and went over, meaning that I had won the title, £150, a massive trophy and the opportunity to play at the touchtennis headquarters for the Summer Slam.
